While Pompeii is larger and more famous, Ercolano is the true jewel of preservation. The reason? It was instantly buried beneath a protective blanket of volcanic mud. When it was rediscovered in 1709, archaeology had evolved into a more advanced science, allowing for a much more careful and methodical excavation than Pompeii initially received.

• Astounding Details: You will be captivated by the wall paintings that still retain their original vivid colors, as well as the ancient bars (thermopolia) with terracotta jars built into the counters—the Roman equivalent of Take Away!
  
• Roman Opulence: Observe the elegant impluvia—richly decorated indoor basins designed to collect rainwater—which gave these residences an aura of luxury that generally surpasses those found in Pompeii.
  
• The Harbor That Changed Everything: The ancient port area is undoubtedly the most emotional stop. Here, hundreds of residents sought refuge while awaiting a rescue that never arrived. The impact was so sudden that their remains were instantly preserved in place. Our visit was focused solely on Ercolano, and it was perfect. However, if you want to maximize your day—especially during peak season with longer daylight hours and by departing early from Rome—you can combine:

1. Ercolano and Pompeii: An intensive tour of both ancient sites. A combined ticket is the most economical option.
2. Ercolano and Mount Vesuvius Crater: Shuttles and tours to the summit volcano leave directly from outside Ercolano Scavi train station.

🚉 From Rome to Ercolano "On Your Own": Step-by-Step Guide

If, like us, you enjoy organizing your own journey to travel at your own pace and budget, this step-by-step breakdown will save you time and money!

1. Route Planning with Omio

Booking train tickets in advance is key to securing cheap, fast travel. Even if the first Sunday of the month offers free museum entry (always verify current policies!), return train tickets can get expensive closer to the date. Comparing routes early is essential, and the Omio app makes it quick and simple.

Pro Tip: When searching on Omio, set Naples (Napoli) as your destination rather than Ercolano. Searching directly for Ercolano won't display the local Circumvesuviana suburban line, limiting your options to regional stops further away. Naples Central Station is the ideal transit hub.

Distances to keep in mind: Ercolano is located just 9 km (5.5 miles) from Naples. Pompeii lies about 20-25 km away, giving you easy access from Naples, Sorrento, or Salerno.

2. Heading South! (Our Travel Itinerary)

• OUTBOUND to Naples:
  • Departure: 9:26 AM from Roma Termini.
  • Train: Intercity 551 (Duration: 2 hours. Approx cost: €30 per person).
  • High-speed trains (1 hour, higher cost) and Regional trains (3 hours, budget cost) are also available depending on your preference!
• Connecting to Ercolano:
  • Arrive at Napoli Centrale and walk inside the terminal to the adjacent Napoli Garibaldi station lower level.
  • Take the local Circumvesuviana train line towards Sorrento or Poggiomarino (purchase tickets at the counter for ~€2.60 per person). Trains run frequently and do not require seat reservations.

It's worth noting that despite bad press and chaotic videos sometimes shared on social media, our experience on the Circumvesuviana line was entirely smooth and positive. Viral content often highlights isolated incidents, but for everyday travel, it proved to be a practical, budget-friendly transit option.

3. The Journey Back to Rome

Although Pompeii closed at 5:00 PM during the low season (we could have squeezed it in had we left Rome earlier), we decided to head back comfortably without rushing. It's always great to save something for the next trip! 😉

We enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant on the walk back to Ercolano Scavi station. Good to know: Dining in Ercolano is significantly cheaper than in Rome, and the local hospitality was wonderful!

• Local Train Leg:
  • 3:30 PM: Departed from Ercolano Scavi (plenty of time to explore).
  • 5:00 PM: Arrived at Napoli Garibaldi.
• Return to Rome:
  • 5:20 PM: Regionale train from Napoli Centrale.
  • While this was the lowest cost ticket and took 3 hours, the train interior was exceptionally clean, quiet, and comfortable. It was the ideal balance of cost and comfort.

4. Final Tip: Smart Ticket Purchases

For our return journey, we checked Omio for real-time schedules and picked the Regionale train. Purchasing directly via the app saved us from standing in ticket office lines, allowing us to board immediately and secure good seats (regional train tickets do not have assigned seating).
